Smithfolio 0.5 X – Review

Organizing a huge amount of brushes is a challenge. When I discovered the original Smithfolio I loved it at once. It is a beautiful and elegant case with a modular design which allows to switch out the plates. So you can configure the case with any combination of small brush plates, medium brush plates, large brushes plates or with a mesh pocket.
Now Smith Cosmetics has released the Smithfolio 0.5 X which is … well, 0.5 times a Smithfolio, so it is half the size and a perfect travel companion. Read my review below.

I own several of the full Smithfolios, so for everyone who does not know them at all let me give a quick general description of the Smithfolio cases: The case itself is made of black leather and very stylish and elegant. The black leather nicely contrasts with the golden zippers and a big an embossed Smith Cosmetics logo completes the look. Inside, the case has 4 pairs of golden stud buttons which are used to attach the plates or the mesh pocket. This allows for a variety of different configurations.

The plates differ in the width of the straps. The small brush plate fits small brushes and pencils. The medium brush plate is the most versatile in my opinion. It can not only fit small to medium sized brushes, but also lip sticks and other a little bit thicker accessories. You will definitely use the large brush plate for the big brushes only as this is the best fit and the number of inserts is pretty limited here. The mesh bag is well… for anything else.

When storing brushes of different brands you will discover that some are easier to insert into the plates than others. It depends pretty much how “pointy” the brush is. The Smith Cosmetics brushes all have a slim end and are very easy to insert even into the small brush plate. Morphe brushes on the other hand have a very stubby end and you will find it easier to insert those into the medium plate.

All in all the design of these cases is perfect. Not only can you reconfigure a case depending on what you need to store, but also if you are organized and have multiple then you can just grab the plates you need and snap them quickly into a case to take with you.

The new 0.5 x Smithfolio is identical to it’s big brother – it is just exactly half the size and it has only the option for 3 plates. This is not a bad thing as the Smithfolio is admitably quite bulky. Putting one of the original ones into a carry-on literally takes away a quarter of the space. The Smithfolio 0.5 X is really a more portable size. It features almost the same options in regards to the available plates which are of course half the size also. I believe that this case will be the perfect travel companion for short trips. The biggest issue will be: How do you determine what are the essential brushes to take with you when loading it up…???
